What is Reiki?

Reiki is a holistic healing practice that has its roots in Japanese tradition, offering a unique approach to promoting overall well-being. During a Reiki session, I channel universal life energy through my hands and to the recipient, aiming to restore balance and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit. Whether you are new to Reiki or have experienced its benefits before, I hope this blog helps you understand  what Reiki truly entails, deepening  your appreciation of this gentle yet powerful practice.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is derived from the Japanese words “Rei,” meaning universal, and “Ki,” meaning life energy. Together, they form the concept of “universal life energy.” Reiki practitioners believe that this energy flows through all living things and that disruptions or blockages in this energy can lead to physical, emotional, or spiritual imbalances. During a Reiki session, the practitioner serves as a conduit for this energy, guiding it to where it is most needed within the recipient’s body. This process promotes healing by encouraging the natural flow of energy and helping to remove any blockages.

The Reiki Experience

A typical Reiki session involves the recipient lying down or sitting comfortably while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s body. The practitioner then channels Reiki energy, which flows naturally to the areas where it is most needed. Recipients often describe feeling a warm sensation, tingling, or deep relaxation during the session. Some may experience emotional releases or a sense of clarity as the energy works to balance the body’s systems.

The Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is known for its ability to:

  • Reduce stress

  • Promote relaxation

  • Support the body’s natural healing processes

It can be beneficial for a wide range of physical, emotional, and spiritual issues, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and more. By restoring balance to the body’s energy systems, Reiki helps individuals achieve a greater sense of well-being and harmony in their lives.

I was drawn to Reiki after some more traditional medical practices did not help me. I found Reiki was the right solution to offer clarity, restore balance, and help me feel realigned.

History of Reiki

As I practice Reiki, I make sure to reflect on its rich history in order to honor its origins. Reiki was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese healer and teacher. After a profound spiritual experience on Mount Kurama, Usui discovered the principles of Reiki, which are rooted in ancient Eastern spiritual traditions, and initially practiced as a method for personal healing and spiritual development. In 1922, he founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, a society dedicated to teaching and practicing Reiki. His system of healing quickly gained recognition for its effectiveness in promoting physical and emotional well-being. After Usui’s passing in 1926, his students and followers helped spread Reiki to the West, where it continues to thrive and evolve.

Reiki’s journey from Japan to a global healing practice highlights its universal appeal and the enduring power of its gentle, yet profound, approach to well-being.

The Philosophy Behind Reiki

Reiki is not just a technique but a spiritual practice that encompasses five key principles. I work to impart these principles during Reiki sessions, and they can help promote healing even after you depart a session:

1. Just for today, I will not be angry.

2. Just for today, I will not worry.

3. Just for today, I will be grateful.

4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

These principles are meant to guide individuals in leading a balanced, mindful, and compassionate life. By integrating these values into daily life, practitioners and recipients alike can cultivate a deeper sense of peace and well-being.

Conclusion

Reiki is a powerful healing practice that offers a holistic approach to health and well-being. Whether you are seeking relief from physical pain, emotional distress, or simply looking to enhance your spiritual growth, Reiki can provide a path to healing and balance. Embracing the principles and practices of Reiki can lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling life.
